The whole thing is a surreal, pinballing experience that's sharply and sometimes poetically observed, and densely packed with jokes. The pair's dissection of theatrical devices – beginning with the one-sided phone call and the coughing of blood into a handkerchief to portend one's imminent demise – leads into their own meta-play, a kind of biographical confessional that at one point involves them interviewing a real-life, big-name celebrity guest on their little-watched public-access TV show. Kroll plays struggling actor Gil Faizon, a comparatively kindly sort with a high tolerance for abuse and a certain psychosexual vulnerability when it comes to raccoons. Geegland, the more monstrous half of the duo – he's a bitter novelist with a cruel streak and a disturbing past. Eggman shatters the universe, Sonic races through parallel dimensions to reconnect with his friends and save the world. ![]() As such, they are authorities on theatre, and have put together a theatre masterclass, which enables Kroll and Mulaney to address the audience of this real-life special as if it was the audience of their fictional one.
